Accommodation in Africa

Do the people in Africa live in Houses? A question quite often asked and the answer is YES.
Of course there are variables of what these houses consist off, however it will be very uncommon to find people living in the wild on a nomadic basis as they did a hundred years ago. If you, as a tourist come across such people, it will be for show only, as a tourist attraction.
When you travel to Africa you will sleep in a comfortable bed and be enclosed by decent mortar walls, protected from the outside wildlife, unless you choose otherwise.
Wherever you choose to lay your head, the astonishing view from your bed, will conspire to steep you in an atmosphere that is uniquely and distinctly African – no matter what African safari lodge, camp or hotel you visit.
Accommodations vary from a township B&B to splendid country lodges, colonial homesteads and world-class luxury hotels and resorts. Your stay on safari may range from humble tents you have to erect yourself, through bungalows to deluxe 5-star lodges where each room may boast its own swimming pool, even if the room has canvas walls and as such passes as a tent!

Hotels

Hotels vary from graceful establishments steeped in Colonial heritage to modern establishments more connected to shopping experiences. Others are chosen for their unique locations within golf or wine estates, while some provide the traveller with magnificent beach experiences. Small private hotels - among the world's best - provide personalised, discreet service.

Safari Lodges

For those where comfort and luxury is not negotiable, we recommend the intimate accommodation of a safari lodge. Built of permanent materials, comfort levels are as you would expect from a luxurious hotel. These are smaller establishments outside of metropolitan areas where visitors experience wildlife, nature or culture at close quarters, while being cared for in a unique and memorable fashion. The emphasis is on providing the traveller with an unsurpassed experience of Africa without having to abandon creature comforts.
Lodge sizes vary from 3 to as many as 50 rooms, with the larger hotel-like establishments found in East Africa. Southern Africa's lodges rarely contain more than 25 rooms, where you will be treated as a guest and friend, not as a number.

Bed & Breakfast & Guesthouses

These establishments are best used when travellers wish to be more directly in contact with locals, or to save costs for the actual safari experience. B & B's are often selected because of the strong individual stamp which owners have placed on the character of their establishments.
B&B's are mostly found in towns and cities, however you may also find some along roads in the rural areas. BedandBreakfast.comdoes list quite a few B&B's, Guesthouses, Country-inns, and other establishments in Africa.

Tented Camps

Often consisting of a permanent tent with en-suite bathroom facilities and permanently constructed public areas, tented camps provide the ultimate blend between comfort and intimacy with the environment. Beautifully appointed and architecturally integrated into the landscape, the quality and romance of tented camps can make them the most expensive of all African safari lodges, camps and hotels. However this will vary much, depending on location and luxury offered.

Bush Camps

Often located deep in Africa's wild areas, this style of camp is becoming increasingly rare. What makes this type of property so special are the limited number of chalets (often only three or four), the people who run them, no electricity and their remoteness. Generally, this style of camp is simple and rustic, but still has all the creature comforts like good food, hot water, flush toilets and of course, the best locations.

Rest Camps

Commonly found in National Parks, Rest Camps provide comfortable accommodation at reasonable prices, and are often a first choice for those on self-drive excursions. Genarally accommodation is in bugalow-style ranging from 2 person to 10 person, and is on a selfcatering basis. Shops and restaurants are normally nearby.

Campsites / Camping Grounds

Found throughout Africa, and are either operated privately or by local government bodies. As with camping grounds elsewhere in the world, these can vary in amenities.
Ordinary campsites will provide the minimum amenities, such as toilets, fireplaces and running water. Campsites on resorts in South Africa commonly offer much more and will have shops and restaurants.
"Special Campsites" often found in eastern Africa might not have any amenities. They are merely a place where you are allowed to camp. It is necessary to pre-book special campsites, and advisable to book ordinary ones.
Camping outside appointed campsites or camping grounds is not advisable from a safty point of view, and law might prohibit this.

Private Mobile Camping Safaris

Luxury Camping trips provide participants with a quality experience where their needs are catered for. Extremely efficient and organised, your camp is set up at your day's destination before you arrive. Tents are large and surprisingly comfortable, with simple but adequate en-suite facilities. The support crew ensures, of course, that all your needs are taken care of.
