Guidelines and Your Safety

Going down a snowy mountain slope at high speed exposes you to certain dangers. Thousands of skiers get injured each year, some get injured seriously. Before you go skiing, make sure that you have some basic knowledge of the risks involved and the Skiing Injuries you might encounter. Taking the necessary precautions and help you to handle risky situations.
* It is very advisable to take a few ski lessons before you head out. Not only can you learn about the basic techniques of how to ski, but also how to minimize injury in a fall.
* Be in good physical shape. This will benefit to your overall enjoyment of the outing and reduce chances of injury.
* Dressing in layers permits you to put up with the constant temperature changes of your body. Use a sweater, or a Ski Jacket. Your pants should be waterproof. Wear gloves and something to keep your head warm. A comfortable helmet is always a good option and provides good protection while skiing or snowboarding.
* Goggles are essential to wear while skiing because the glare off the snow during bright days exposes skiers to harsh UV rays. Having tinted lenses with UV protection can enhance your visibility, otherwise at least wear sunglasses. Extreme weather conditions makes skiing on the slopes more difficult if you don't wear decent ski goggles.
* Reflection off the Snow increases the risk of sunburn or skin damage. Apply a sun block with a high SPF to all exposed skin, especially in the face.
* Wear proper gear and equipment, which suits your body, ability and style. Check your bindings regularly or have them checked by an experienced person.
* Warm up before you head downhill. Take several slow Ski turns, or do a few exercises and stretches.
* Have a Ski-buddy (Skiing partner) and do not lose sight of each other. If you lose your partner, stop for a while and wait.
* Stay on marked trails and do not Ski on avalanche-risk areas such as steep hillsides that do not have much vegetation.
* As with many other outdoor activities, you need to drink a lot of water to remain hydrated. You may not feel thirsty due to the cold and/or wet conditions, but drink some fluids at regular short intervals. Drinking alcohol and Skiing are not a good combination. The same goes for taking medicines, which may cause side effects and impair your senses.
* If you get tired, stop and take a rest. Fatigue can increase your chances of getting injuries. This also implies to your concentration.
* If you get yourself into terrain that is to uncomfortable or to steep for you, keep your Skis on and side-step down that slope.
* Keep a constant lookout at the weather. It can suddenly change and become uncomfortable; be prepared to return indoors.

These basic precautions will give you more time and ability to enjoy your Skiing or Boarding.
You have to concentrate on what you are doing, but don't forget to enjoy the scenery too.
